How Michigan inmate mail works
- Michigan sends prisoner mail to each facility directly by USPS. Address it to the prisoner’s full committed name and MDOC number, then the facility’s own address.
- All incoming personal mail is photocopied in black and white at the facility; the prisoner receives the photocopy and the original — including any photos — is shredded. Send copies, not originals.
- Include your full name and return address. Mail without the MDOC number or a return address can be rejected or returned.
- Confirm the person’s current facility on MDOC’s Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS) before mailing — people are transferred between prisons without notice.

- Cash, checks, money orders, or postage stamps
- Any item other than paper (no polaroids, laminated items, or enclosures)
- Nude or sexually explicit photos or content
- Stickers, glitter, glue, tape, perfume, lipstick, or crayon/marker
- Books, magazines, or publications sent as personal mail
