How South Carolina inmate mail works
- South Carolina sends inmate mail to each institution directly. In the center of the envelope put the inmate’s committed name, SCDC number, living/dorm unit, the institution name, and the institution’s full address.
- Put your name and complete return address in the upper-left corner. Mail without a return address or the SCDC number can be rejected.
- Incoming mail is opened and inspected for contraband; only paper letters are accepted, with up to 10 photos per envelope (extras are discarded).
- People in Restricted Housing (RHU) or Reception & Evaluation (R&E) cannot receive photos or publications. Confirm the person’s current institution on SCDC’s inmate search before mailing.

- Cash, checks, money orders, or postage stamps
- Anything other than paper letters (no polaroids, stickers, or anything containing metal)
- Nude, sexually explicit, or violent/illegal content
- More than 10 photos in one envelope
- Any photos or publications to someone in Restricted Housing or Reception & Evaluation
